Okay so here is the deal, In my history class we were learning about muckrakers. Muckrakers were journalists who took a problem in the country or society, and wrote about everything that was wrong with it. They used techniques like exaggeration, sensationalism, and other things of that sort to convey their point and persuade their readers. My assignment was to take a problem in America today and write an article/paper in the style of a muckraker, using sensationalism and exaggeration. Many people were choosing serious topics that would be easy to do, but i wanted a challenge, so for my problem in America I chose..... JUSTIN BIEBER. I got the approval from my teacher and wrote the article. I will post the article and i want you guys to tell me what you think.

Justin Bieber is a person whose actions and mere presence can disrupt the peace of any location you could think of. He is a bad influence on teenagers and causes outbreaks of fans comparable to riots. He takes one step into public, and there are camera crews and T.V. crews all around him, taking pictures and making a lot of noise. It is also entirely possible that fans will be around. And Justin Bieber’s fans are anything but normal and controlled.

The hordes of screaming girls that follow him around are loud, obnoxious, dangerous, and even homicidal. These fans hysterical when they see him, they hold up posters with ridiculous things like “Marry me Justin?” on them. They scream at the top of their lungs and violently fight each other for a spot at the front of the group. Justin’s fan hordes are extremely dangerous, and people have been sent to the hospital from being caught in and under these hordes. They are pushed, shoved, elbowed, and forced to the ground by other screaming girls, and occasionally screaming boys. Once you are on the ground there is no mercy, you are trampled, causing serious injuries, many people have been sent to the hospital, bruised and bloody from being caught under the fans. Bones have broken and permanent damage done to the bodies of the girls unfortunate enough to get caught under their feet. Fans of Justin Bieber have even gone so far as to threaten the life of his celebrity girlfriend Selena Gomez. These fans are dangerous and uncompromising, they do not listen to reason or logic, and they should be avoided at all costs.

Justin is also a bad role model for smaller children, and even other teenagers who exemplify him. Justin has his personal security violently attack photographers and paparazzi. He just walks by the people being clobbered and battered, laughing as he goes. The Photographers struggle to get away as Justin watches them attempt to escape in vain. This will go on until Bieber says stop, and sometimes he will not say so until the paparazzi is unconscious. Justin himself is too puny and weak to hit grown men, so he resorts to hitting little children for his personal pleasure. Justin punches small children of all ages without warning, he has repeatedly done this to random children without provocation. Justin is a savage… well that’s just it, no one quite knows just what he is. They know he is savage, and they know he is vicious, but they don’t know what he is.

Justin is surrounded by violence, at that is the way he likes it. His security violently beats people while Justin watches on, his sick mind contemplating when he should make his sinister henchmen stop, if he makes him stop at all. Justin’s fans are just as violent as he is, violently pushing and shoving their way through each other, and trampling anyone underneath them without a second thought, no doubt Justin enjoys this. Justin himself is violent as well, punching random children half his age when unprovoked, just to get his sick kicks.

Justin Bieber has caused nothing but chaos since he came to America, he needs to be permanently eradicated from the states as soon as possible, and his mere presence endangers the lives and the sanity of many people. He is a serious problem, a threat to our society, and a dangerous person to even be here. However no one seems to realize just how bad he really is. This problem must be fixed, Justin Bieber is a menace to the country, and he must be taken care of as quickly as possible before more innocent people fall victim to the violence that surrounds him.

The muckrakers got their name indirectly from Teddy Roosevelt:

There are, in the body politic, economic and social, many and grave evils, and there is urgent necessity for the sternest war upon them. There should be relentless exposure of and attack upon every evil man whether politician or business man, every evil practice, whether in politics, in business, or in social life. I hail as a benefactor every writer or speaker, every man who, on the platform, or in book, magazine, or newspaper, with merciless severity makes such attack, provided always that he in his turn remembers that the attack is of use only if it is absolutely truthful.

Muckrakers were the first investigative journalists. Upton Sinclair and Jacob Riis are two examples of the muckraking tradition in action.

Upton Sinclair:
In The Jungle (1906), Sinclair gave a scathing indictment of unregulated capitalism as exemplified in the meatpacking industry. His descriptions of both the unsanitary conditions and the inhumane conditions experienced by the workers shocked and galvanized readers. Sinclair had intended it as an attack upon capitalist enterprise, but readers reacted viscerally. Domestic and foreign purchases of American meat fell by half.[20] Sinclair lamented: "I aimed at the public's heart, and by accident I hit it in the stomach."[2] The novel was so influential that it spurred government regulation of the industry, as well as the passage of the Pure Food and Drug Act.

Jacob Riis:
He is known for using his photographic and journalistic talents to help the impoverished in New York City; those impoverished New Yorkers were the subject of most of his prolific writings and photography. He supported the implementation of "model tenements" in New York with the help of humanitarian Lawrence Veiller. In addition, as one of the most prominent proponents of the newly practicable "open flash," he is considered a pioneer in photography. While living in New York, Riis faced poverty and became a police reporter covering the quality of life in the slums. He attempted to alleviate the poor living conditions many lower class citizens were subjected to.

Wikipedia has great articles on these journalists and on muckraking.

The Jungle is one of my fav books from college. That, Secret Agent (by Joseph Conrad), and Hard Times by Dickens. Also checked out and looked at Jacob Riis's photo books way back when. University libraries are so cool that way, all sorts of obscure stuff or old books that would cost a fortune to buy, and every bit of it accessible. Then there's this thing called Interlibrary Loan, where you can check out rare books from just about any university library in North America.

Loved this.....
