My Take on Death Troopers

Post by Deviss on Sat Mar 19, 2011 10:48 am

Since no one has made a Topic pertaining to Books, I figured I would take a stab at it.

Two years ago, during the month of October, a new Star Wars Novel was released. This Novel wasn't your normal Star Wars piece however. It was set one year before the events of "A New Hope". That Novel is...

When the Imperial prison barge Purge — temporary home to five hundred of the galaxy's most ruthless killers, rebels, scoundrels and thieves — breaks down in a distant, uninhabited part of space, its only hope seems to lie with a Star Destroyer found drifting, derelict and seemingly abandoned. But when a boarding party is sent to scavenge for parts, only half of them come back — bringing with them a horrific disease so lethal that within hours, nearly all aboard the Purge will die in ways too hideous to imagine.

And death is only the beginning.

The Purge's half-dozen survivors — two teenage brothers, a sadistic captain of the guards, a couple of rogue smugglers and the chief medical officer, the lone woman on board — will do whatever it takes to stay alive. But nothing can prepare them for what lies waiting on-board the Star Destroyer amid its vast creaking emptiness that isn't really empty at all. The dead are rising, soulless, unstoppable, and unspeakably hungry.

From the very beginning, Death Troopers was engrossing. The reader is quickly introduced to the Main Characters, and learn what they are about. Their struggles become your own and when a triumph shows up, which isn't very often, you almost feel like cheering for them.

Joe Schreiber has done an outstanding job with Death Troopers. The level of detail, especially when the first of the Zombie's rear their decaying heads, is wonderful. At times the suspense and it's build up really gets to you. Try reading this in your house, alone, in the dark and not look around every so often thinking a decaying Stormtrooper or murderous prisoner will be waiting for you.

I was pleasantly surprised by the addition of two unexpected Characters. Of which any Star Wars Fan will immediately recognize. Or at least they should. If you're looking for a new book to read, or if you just have some downtime, I seriously recommend you pick up Death Troopers. Of all the Star Wars Books I have read, this is one of the best.

If I have left something important out, don't hesitate to bring it up. I'll try and make Topics about the Republic Commando Series and the Ranger's Apprentice Series as well.

I've been meaning to get this book ever since it came out. Just sheer inertia that I haven't. An alt cover for the book kinda blows the surprise, since a furry guy and his buddy are on the cover.
