Fave book/ Book Recommendation Thread

Post by Mobius on Thu Aug 04, 2011 4:26 am

Well the thread explains it all, post your fave book or books you like to recommend to other members. So i guess i'll go first.

The two books that I want to recommend is the Noli Me Tangere and its sequel, El Filibusterismo by Dr. Jose P. Rizal, my country's national hero and why did I recommend this? Because of how deep the plot is as this is published during the Spanish occupation in the philippines. Before reading these two novels, i suggest you google the author's life first, as the novels have ALOT (and i mean alot) of symbols on the life my ancestors during the Spanish occupation.

These novels were written in Spanish, but Charles Derbyshire translated these novels into english, The Social Cancer (Noli Me Tangere), and The Reign of Greed (El Filibusterismo) and I use these books in school, as we study Jose Rizal's works and readings in accordance to Republic Act 1425, where high schools and colleges are required to have a course on these two books and on Jose Rizal.

Fortunately, i found links where you can read the whole book.

The Social Cancer

The Reign of Greed

Hope you guys like it! Very Happy

That's easy; A Game of Thrones and A Clash of Kings. Both by George R.R. Martin.

Both great books but they're very detailed.

Dune, by Frank Herbert. I can't recommend the many sequels, but the first in the series, the original, is as good as it gets.

Swords Against Death and Swords in the Mist, both by Fritz Leiber. This is the guy who taught George RR Martin how to write.

I'll be back. I've been a prolific reader all my life, I've got a lot of "bests."

Game of throne? As in the new HBO series? I didn't know it was based on a book.

Yep, big fantasy series, up to five or six books now. Dev can tell you more about 'em. I've only read one of the novels, he's read most of 'em.

The very same. If you haven't seen the first Season, I would definitely recommend it. Though, it does have some nudity, violence, and the occasional swearing instance.

It is based on a Book Series, such as where Season One came from; the first Book, A Game of Thrones.

Lol, I've only finished the first Book Frang. I'm 3/4 of the way through A Clash of Kings, the Second Book, but there's still three others to read.

The Redwall series of course, as well as Watership down.

I'd recommend anything by Ted Dekker though. Superb supernatural/psychological thrillers/fantasy epics. I've managed to get everyone who's read on of his books hooked, including Tempest and Kiba. He's an exceptional author, and his novels are some of the more mind bending ones out there right now. For instance, his Circle Saga; The story works like a circle. The "final" book in the series ends, and starts, the story. Whether you start with the first book or the last book, the story comes out right. Craziness.

Are these the ones by Jose Rizal? I should read him sometime. There are lots of English translations available.

For serious works, my favs include The Jungle by Upton Sinclair, The Secret Agent by Joseph Conrad, and Down and Out in Paris and London by George Orwell.

I loved The Jungle when I read it. My favorite book is The Family Swiss Family Robinson. I just love the Island survival feel without the whole drama crap that TV shows like Lost have.

I haven't read that one in a long time. My memories of the story are all confused with the silly Disney movie of the same name.

Mob, I re-read your first post and then checked Project Gutenberg. There are kindle editions of both his books, so I'm gonna download em and put em on my kindle. Thanks, man.

Book = Better than the movie. Like almost all cases.

Cool, tell me how the book is and if it deserves a thumbs up from you Smile And if you are confused in some of the phrases, don't hesitate to ask.

I think that the Lord of the Rings books were very good but for a similer style but simpler and easier to read books I'd recommend the Eragon books.
