I'll attempt to answer any questions you have about GIMP, and some about Photoshop to the best of my ability, too.

I'm not great at critiquing, but I like the top one. Only thing I don't really like is the font, but that's just me.

The Batman one is too dark, and the render is way off to the side. Sometimes, making it to the side helps, but with yours he's so small that you can hardly see him, and that takes the focus from batman and puts it to the background. Try making him bigger, and centering him a little bit more. Also, try to use some soft light brushes. The font doesn't really flow very well, and it's also very hard to see because of the darkness.

The Crysis one and the Car one are decent, but the font sticks out again, and the backgrounds aren't very good. Try to look for backgrounds and stuff of that sort on Deviant Art. http://www.deviantart.com/ Maybe try putting them on the background, and fitting in your effects and brushes with the background, or over the render. But, remember to no take focus away from the render, and keep it from getting blurry.

The Brandon Jabobs one is the best out of the bunch, but the splatter sort of stuff on either side of him look way too sharp, and the font is once again out of place. Over all good, but still a little bit lacking.

Keep it up Vandal, and remember to look for tutorials, they help a lot. You can find hundreds of really good tutorials on Deviant Art. Start with the more simple ones, and work you way up.

Make sure the stuff in front of the render is out of the way, it takes some of the focus away from the render. You always want it to be clean in front of the main part of the render. I'd also make the render a little bit bigger than it is. Other than that, it's very good.
