Portal

Post by zeb k on Thu Feb 09, 2012 12:04 pm

Sure it was no amazing graphics wonder. Sure it was only a couple hours long. Sure there was pretty much no plot. I loved it. I'm talking of course about Portal, Valve's award winning puzzle game. I enjoyed more then 90% of games that I play. It's simple and short and virtually plotless but that just increases it's charm. For those of you who don't know Portal is a first person puzzle game in which you use the Aperture Science Handheld Portal Device, or portal gun, to solve a series of puzzles which never get to the point where you feel like smashing your computer screen out of frustration but also never get to easy. It's well paced and has very good gameplay which is kept(surprise surprise) simple. Whether solving the puzzle or simple bouncing around for the fun of it it's a extremely good game. At $30 it seems a bit steep for the 2-4 hours gameplay but I can see that is has replay value as there is more then one way to solve most puzzles. And of course if you.... come across it questionably online then it's really small at 700 MB. Plus it has some great humor in it which is more then you can say for most games. Smile . All in all I loved it and it's definitely worth it to get it. And now I can't really think of anything else to say about it. Very Happy

It's a great game, no doubt. Well worth picking up, even for $30.

I'm actually getting Portal 2 now. Do you think it's better then the first one? Yahtzee(Zero Punctuation) said it was good but not as good as the first one. http://www.escapistmagazine.com/videos/view/zero-punctuation/3153-Portal-2 Funnyness Wink

I loved both games. Also, I thought it had some plot. You were being tested/testing the portal gun/cake. Also, at least its not as bad as QUBE. Now that game has no plot. Also, doesn't have much story either. Razz

Yes but the plot is really just to explain why you are solving puzzles and so on.
Also, at least its not as bad as QUBE.
I never said that the lack of plot was a bad thing.

Both are good, but I have a special fondness for the first Portal because it was originally a little freebie game that came bundled with The Orange Box Half Life 2 release (man, so much to explain here - keep it short - HL2 had multiple "chapters" released after the main game came out, The Orange Box bundled them all together and included the latest "chapter" in the HL2 saga, along with Portal and TF2 - a lot of gamer goodness was in The Orange Box). I love free stuff, especially when aforesaid free stuff is as spectacularly good as Portal is.

EDIT: Thanks for the review! Good work, Zeb!

The Orange Box came out in October 2007. That's when I got it. You can still buy it, it's on Amazon, but it'd be cheaper to get everything from Steam. I think. Here's the link. You decide. Good review, did I already say that?
