The Calm before the Storm
It's been a quiet 3 days here in camp. Haven't seen anything moving in the forest that's at the edge of camp. I've been 2 weeks and haven't seen any action. Maybe that's I suppose, although I wish I could do something besides just sitting around cleaning my gun's and smoking.
*All of a sudden a bright flash tears through the darkness followed by the harsh crack of a mortar* Brought back to reality by a sudden explosion, I dive into the trench to my right. I hear screams yells all around me. I look up over the edge of the trench to see absolute chaos erupting around me. Another round hits the ground 3 feet in front of me, I hunched down in the trench and flicked the safety off on my rifle. I chance another look over the edge of the trench to see 5-7 people coming at me firing, I swung my rifle up and started unloading into them. I could see I was scoring hits by the way their bodies were jerking and falling. As soon as they were down, I scrambled up out of the ditch towards the rest of my squad.
"Where have you been Private?" my Squad Leader yells at me. I cast a nervous glance around and just shrug. He doesn't push it because right at that moment we get another wave of mortars. He points at several gun turrets and motions for us to get to them. I sprint for the nearest one, check to see that it's fully loaded and start to swing it around towards the enemy coming into camp. A grenade goes off 2 feet in front of me. Momentarily dazed I fight through the mental haze and start to fire the gun and the direction of the people charging in through the blown in wall. My adrenaline in soaring as i keep firing, I sense a presence behind me. I turn around for a glance and see someone coming at me with a knife out and held low. I abandon the gun and in one smooth motion I whip out my knife and throw it at the person, it catches the person in the chest. Glancing to make he's down I turn back to the gun turret and start firing it again.
This entire ordeal lasts for about 4 hours.
It's all quiet now, the enemy retreated back into the woods. We all gather around to see who's wounded and dead and to give encouragement to those who came out of it fine. We all reload and get fresh ammo. I go back to my original post before all this hit a bit shaken and thankin God that I'm still in one piece.
Welcome to my life.
(I know this is a very short story, if you guys want, I can extend it and add more onto it. just lemme know)

Revisions as such:

All of a sudden a bright flash tears through the darkness followed by the harsh crack of a mortar round. Brought back to reality by the sudden explosion, I dive into the trench at my right. I hear the screams and yells of those wounded surround me. Looking up over the edge of the trench, I see absolute chaos erupting around me.
Another Mortar round slams into the ground three feet in front of me. Hunching down in the trench and flicking the safety off on my rifle, I chance another look over the edge of the trench to see a handful of enemies charging towards me, spraying bullets everywhere. I swung my rifle up over the trench's edge and started unloading lead into their bodies. I could see my shots hit home by the way their bodies were jerking and falling. As soon as they were down, I scrambled up out of the trench towards the rest of my squad.
"Where the Hell have you been Private?!?" my Squad Leader yelled at me. I casted a nervous glance around and just shrugged. He didn't push the matter because, right at that moment, another wave of mortars exploded all around our position. Pointing at several gun turrets placed at small interval around the camp, my Squad Lead motions for us to get to them. I sprint for the nearest one, check to see that it's fully loaded and swing it around towards the enemies charging into the camp. Suddenly, a grenade explodes a couple feet in front of me, peppering me with dirt and debris.
Momentarily dazed, I fight through the mental haze and start to fire the gun and the direction of the enemies charging in through the blown-in wall. My adrenaline skyrockets as I jam my thumbs on the firing buttons over and over. Sensing a presence behind me, I chance a quick glance around. Out of the corner of my left eye, I see someone coming at me with a knife out and held low. I roll off the turret's platform and, in one smooth motion, I withdraw my tactical knife and throw it at the shrouded figure. It catches the him in the chest, making a low thumping sound. Checking to make he's dead, I jump back on the turret's platform and jam my thumbs on the firing buttons again.------------------------------
The entire ordeal lasted for about four hours, with my Squad sustaining minimal casualties. It's quiet as a graveyard now, the enemy retreated back into the woods, carelessly leaving their fallen comrades in the blood-saturated ground. My Squad gathers around to see who's wounded, who's dead and to give encouragement to those who survived. We all grab fresh ammo, while we have the time. Trudging back to my original post before this event, I realize I was a bit shaken and, quietly, thank God that I'm still in one piece.
Welcome to my life.
