Try the rectangle marquee tool, if that's what you mean. Or the lasoo tool if you don't want it rectangular.

Fastest would be magic wand, but that is perhaps the worst way to do it, unless it is a full 100% solid color background that does not match the character.
Best, however, is the polygonal laso. Click, click, click, click...

or using gimp.. set layer to alpha something..then zoom in to 400 - 800%.. then take a small brush and carefully erase around teh boomps

He's supposed to be that way. Though he wears the body of a human, the designers wanted to strongly imply that he wasn't really human.

So many of the games I'm looking forward to are currently vaporware, it's discouraging. Supposedly we'll learn more about G-Man in Half Life 3, which is coming out at the end of the year.....supposedly.
