I personally use Photoshop, the others like to use GIMP and I think Fox uses elements.

Re: Den's Graphics
lol nubs payin for programs.
Admitedly, I paid for the Adobe Suite CS3 back in the day. CS5 is way better, and i haz for free.
But I don't endorse piracy. In this case, Google is NOT your best friend. Finding "free" retail programs usually means virus. You kind of have to know what you are doing, or have someone (SUPER HINT: Not me) who knows about it to just hand you links.

Re: Den's Graphics
Quit using the magic wand tool (Or that other auto select tool which name I forgot, cuz I never use it). Look at the edges of the images. Looks like you cut it with a rusty knife, or baseball bat.
Use the polygonal laso tool instead.
Reffer to this vid, skip to 2:15, and see the results.
http://www.xfire.com/video/2ceab/
Zoom in quite close. Not too close, to the point where you can't tell the pixels appart, and not too far so that you are not accurate.
To pan the view zone, press and hold the space bar, then left click and drag. Release spacebar, and you can keep on clicking.
Many short strokes>few long strokes, unless it is an evident straight line.
Yes, pain in the rear. Yes, slow process. Yes, much better ressults.

Re: Den's Graphics
I guess I'll give you the entire lesson.
Magic Wand tool: Clearing renders, making them transparent.
Render: Image with a solid color as a background, usually white/gray. Also, image that has no background (transparent).
https://2img.net/r/ihimizer/img441/3843/halo3wallpaper2.jpg
On that image, you forgot to clear the Scout's gun. It still has a white background. Not only that, but the tolerance level on the magic wand tool is too high. Also, there is some feather into it, which is what makes the white outline of all 5 renders. (Unless you meant to have the white outline to beggin with, which IMO looks terrible). Anti-aliasing should be turned on/enabled whenever you are cleaning renders.
Personally, when I have a render*, I set the tolerance level as low as possible. That way I can clear the background and end with a clean transparent image.
When I'm extracting a render, I use the polygonal lazo tool, with no tolerance and no feather, and with Anti-aliasing on.
*There have been some instances where my render is mainly white, and the background it has is also white (or matching colors render/background). Having no tolerance, means that the magic wand will eat away the parts of the render that are below the ignore tresshold. In these cases, I use the polygonal lazo tool.

Re: Den's Graphics
Rendering on Gimp is way easier in my opinion. Doesn't take all that long and looks better, like Amp said.

This. I'm normally from about 300-600% depending on the size of the image, long and painful, but much better looking. Don't be too lazy to undo it and try again either.

Re: Den's Graphics
Allright, I'll put you to the test~
https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v168/raconmario/EVA-02MV02.jpg
Make me a 500*200 sig of that. Make it awesome. For text, just type "Eva Unit 02".
When I get home, I'll record the making process I use, using that same image, and making a same size sig.
