CCP: The Beta Squad Chronicles: PT4

Tatooine: Mos Eisley Cantina: Clone Wars: Day 316

Trooper eyed the Kel-Dor carefully. There was no reason to trust him. Then, there was no reason not to trust him.

Except for the fact that the men who had sent the Betas to him were apparently assassins.

And he had a lighsaber but claimed not to be a jedi.

Which meant that- in any event- Jens Hentonar was a dangerous being.

“What sort of ‘proposition’?” Trooper asked.

Hentonar gave a cynical laugh.

“Heh, don’t trust me, eh? I don’t blame you. Let me tell you a bit about myself then. You see, once, some time ago, I was jedi. I was a member of the enclave on Corellia. After several years there, I decided that I was not cut from the same cloth as the others. They deemed me rebellious, a troublemaker. I never caused any trouble, but I was….. Difficult. To teach, that is. So, after a less-than-succesful raid on a group of Mandolore who had been terrorizing the countryside, I left,” The Kel-Dor let out a sigh. “I thought it would be for the best… I think now I may have been wrong.”

“What does any of this have to do with me?”

Hentonar shook his head.

“Too impatient, you humans. Ah, well… What it has to do with you, is the name of one of my peers at the enclave. A man named Cypher Dios.”

Trooper looked at the former jedi in surprise.

“You knew Cypher Dios?”

“Correction. I know Cypher Dios.”

“That’s impossible, he’s dead.”

“You know as well as I that he’s fully alive. The past few days’ events should have proved that much to you. If you had any sense you would have checked his grave while you were on Alderaan. And would have found it empty.”

“Then… the DNA on that lightsaber-“

“Was his. As was the lightsaber itself. He always carried two… bit of a cowardly gesture in my opinion.”

“What was he doing on Dantooine?”

“The man who’s estate was burned- Marius- he was one of the Mandolorian commanders from Corellia,” Hentonar sighed deeply. “Master Dios has become… Let us say troubled. He has fallen a long way from what he once was. I fear that I am the one who caused his fall. He and I, we… We were friends. When I left, I tried to make him come with me. I denounced the Order, his master, even the Force. And… It seems, that he may have taken my departure all those years ago… Rather badly.”

“Meaning?”

“Meaning, my poor simple human, that he has become a rogue. A dark jedi. He has been traversing the galaxy for over ten years now. As a killer. He enjoys the murdering of innocents now. Hearing his victims scream. Watching their dying breaths. Cypher Dios is the one that the Correctional Authorities know as ‘The Ash Killer’. Called so because wherever he kills, he burns everything his victim owned. I’m sure on Marius’ body you found his mark. Three lines, written in ash on his forehead?”

Trooper recalled all too well.

“Yes… There were… Three lines.”

Hentonar nodded.

“I was sure of it. The reason I have summoned you, is that Dios is setting his sights on higher targets. And he can most certainly succeed in reaching them.”

“Like who?”

“Senator Bail Organa for one. Even Supreme Chancellor Palpatine is likely to be attacked.”

Trooper shook his head and laughed.

“The Chancellor is in no danger. Dios could never reach him.”

“Yes…” Hentonar said. So dark was his tone that it made Trooper’s skin crawl. “He will.”

Trooper watched the Kel-Dor. The way he had said that… It made Trooper certain that Dios could indeed reach the Chancellor if so desired.

“How do we figure into this then?” he asked, his voice almost a whisper now.

“I want you to stop him. As soldiers of the Republic, it is your duty. I asked for you because of your reputation. I’m interseted to see if you live up to it.”

“How are we supposed to find him? We don’t exactly have a map, you know.”

“With luck, you won’t need one. Cypher Dios has one surviving family member. His brother, Char. Luckily, he doesn’t live far from here. He knows where Dios has been staying. But he may need some persuading before he gives away that information.”

Trooper thought about it for a moment, and then called Death over to the table.

“Okay. Where is he?”

Tatooine: Mos Eisley Slave District: Clone Wars: Day 317: Early Morning

“Alright, listen up,” Trooper adressed the other members of Beta Squad. “Char Dios, the brother of Cypher Dios, should be in this building. According to Hentonar, he’s likely to put up a bit of a struggle. But we need him alive, so no shooting.”

“What about his knees?” Death asked.

“No shooting period. Now I don’t want him to get away, so we’re going in from opposite sides of the building. Revan and Death, you go in from the back. AT you’re going through the front with me.”

Trooper checked his gun, and the Betas followed suite.

“Alright, let’s go.”

Thirty seconds later, Revan keyed the go-code on his com-link, signaling that he and Death were in position.

Trooper nodded to AT, and kicked open the two-story building’s front door.

He and AT moved forward, checking doors as they went, when they reached the stairs Trooper keyed the go-code again, signaling Revan and Death to cover the two entrances from outside.

Trooper and AT moved up the stairs and began methodically clearing the rooms. Surprisingly, when they reached the back-and final- room, it was empty as well.

“I thought he was supposed to be here…” AT said puzzledly.

Trooper looked frantically about the room. There was no way Char could have know they were coming. As he continued going through the possibilities in his head, a noise caught his attention. Not a loud noise, just a dull thud. From above.

Trooper looked up. The roof. He had to be on the roof.

“Come on, AT!”

Trooper began searching the upstairs rooms again, looking for anything that would lead onto the roof.

In the third room, he found it. Barely visible behind a hanging rug, there it was. A small wooden ladder, leading to a trapdoor in the ceiling.

He blasted the door and ascended the ladder. As he stepped onto the roof, his foot slipped. Then he saw why. He was standing in a pool of fresh blood. A body lay nearby, blood still pouring from it’s slit throat. The person’s face matched the description of Char Dios.

Trooper cursed silently. This screwed everything. He keyed his com-link. “Revan, Death, get up here. Now.”

While waiting for the others Trooper went through Char’s pockets. Empty. Figured.

Trooper sighed and looked up. On the roof directly across from him, fingering a small throwing knife that was red with blood, stood one of the black armored soliders from Alderaan. The evil reptilian eye on his shoulder seemed to have an almost cocky look to it. As did the soldier’s stance. Trooper could almost see the soldier sneering behind his helmet. His entire demeanor screamed: Come get me. I dare you.

Trooper did just that, he sprinted for the edge of the roof and leaped across to the next. Landing with a roll, he sprang up firing at-

The soldier…. He was gone.

“What the-“

A sharp pain in his leg stopped Trooper’s thought before it left his mouth.

He instictively rammed his rifle backwards, catching the soldier square in the midriff.

AT heard the turmoil and looked across to see Trooper and the soldier struggling in a fierce melee.

AT raised his rifle to fire at his commander’s attacker. Just as he was pulling the trigger, something tackled him from the side. When he got his feet back under him, AT found himself facing another one of the soldiers from Alderaan. The small red canid on his shoulder was gleaming in the fierce Tatooine sunlight. He held a vibrosword in his right hand, twirling it every few seconds.

“Wonderful,” AT said sarcastically.

Meanwhile, one story below, Death and Revan were having problems of their own.

The third soldier from Alderaan was apparently very skilled with hand-to-hand combat. As he had disarmed them as soon as they had entered the building, and had as yet remained untouched by either of the Beta troops. A trio of blades ran down each of his gauntlets, giving him an edge both offensively and defensively.

Trooper had had just about enough of this. He’d been going at it with this ninja-wannabe for ten minutes now. He’d taken, and given his fair share of blows, losing his helmet in the process. The soldier was lining up for another attack, and Trooper wasn’t going to take it defensively this time. The soldier rushed him, and Trooper did the same. The collision left them both on the ground for a moment. Trooper was able to grab ahold of his blaster before his enemy fully recovered. When the eye-marked assassin stood, he found himself staring at Trooper’s blaster.

AT had finally managed to turn the tables on his attacker as well, knocking the vibrosword away, and gaining it himself. He now stood with the blade pressed against the enemy soldier’s throat. Waiting for Death and Revan.

Unfortunately, the remaining Betas were not having as much luck as Trooper or AT.

Revan was unconcious, leaving Death to fight the Mandolore marked soldier.

One thing Death had noticed about his enemy during this fight, was that he was no ordinary soldier. He seemed to be bionically enhanced. Making him about ten times stronger than a normal man.

Death made another lunge, but the soldier grabbed his arm and threw him with full strength through the wall of the room they were in. Death landed in the street outside gasping for breath.

Trooper and AT heard the explosive noise from below and looked to see what it was. They only turned their heads for a moment, but when they looked back the assassins were gone.

“DAG!” Trooper swore. “Hurry AT, we need to get down there.”

Thirty minutes later, the Betas were-all of them- concious and investigating the aftermath of their battle for some sign of what knowledge Char had of his brother, Cypher.

Finally, AT found it.

“Trooper, look,” he handed his commander a datapad. “It records several flights to Corellia. There’s one message from Cypher Dios as well.”

Trooper read through the entries.

“I guess we’re going to Corellia.”

"Trooper had had just about enough of this. He’d been going at it with this ninja-wannabe for ten minutes now."

This is about right. I've seen Trooper take on the Wannabes. It was not pretty.

It's called wookieepedia, the star wars wiki. It has every fact ever dreamed up in the Star Wars universe. Here's the link:
http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Main_Page

Warning, it does have spoilers, lots of them, for comics, novels, video games, everything.
