Dragon Age: Origins

Post by zeb k on Thu Apr 05, 2012 11:03 am

Today I'm reviewing Dragon Age: Origins a single player RPG developed by BioWare.

Character.
In the beginning you can choose to play as an elf, a dwarf, or a human. Then you choose a few things such as if you're a dwarf noble or commoner and so on. Then you choose if you want to play as a warrior, a rogue, or a mage. Then you get a different beginning for what you choose(e.g. mages start off in the mage tower, and a noble would start of in a city and so on). Also once you have selected your class(as in mage) then you can select 2 of 4 special thingies that are kinda like perks that you can unlock by doing special quests. They're thing like Healer, Arcane Warrior(for mage), Bard(for rogue) and so on. I played as the mage and I soon found out that the mage class is easily the most powerful in the game, as they can heal, revive dead(or whatever) followers in combat, and have the offensive power of a battleship. The warrior is probably the next best, and the rogue is, quite frankly, fairly useless. I said probably, since I just used my rogues and warriors to keep the enemy away while I slaughtered them.

Story.
In the story you play as a Grey Warden, a guardian of what'sitcalled a kingdom in the land of Ican'tremember, a member of the order of Grey Wardens, who protect the kingdom from the Darkspawn, which seem to be some kind of a cross between Lord of the Rings orcs and Deviss in a bad mood. They are rising up from underground again for the first time since lunch, and you are taken as a apprentice in their ranks, then they all get slaughtered when they are betrayed by some bloke with a fairly impressive scowl, and you have to set of the save the world with only yourself and some guy with a aussie accent.

Followers
In the game you can pick up quite a few followers, many of which(I dunno if all of them do) have quests that you can do to make them like you better. Also you can give them gifts and so on. Some of them might betray you, or only follow you for a few quests, and for most of them you have a choice of recruiting them or not. As I mentioned, I mainly used them as cannon fodder while my mage destroyed the enemy, but they can be useful, especially when some enemy got past them and killed your mage. But once I got the Arcane Warrior perk thingy(so I could wear any armor without having to have my strength way up) then that was a rare thing.

Gameplay.
The combat and so on is that style that SWKotOR2 and The Witcher had where instead of just clicking to attack you have to click the attack button and your character will continue to do the default attack on the enemy until the enemy(or the character) dies or you tell them to do something else. I personally really don't like that kind of gameplay.

Verdict
Did I enjoy this game? Yes. Did I think it was amazing? No. It was pretty good but not the best. While it was fun for most of it, there were some parts where it got really boring. So I'm giving it 3 stars 6/10. Not bad but not the best. The average Amazon price is about 20 bucks.
